چکیده

White Matter Damage (leukomalacia) is detected by the visual inspection of ultrasound images of the neonatal brain by an expert. A need for a (semi) computerised way of segmenting the infected regions, in order to make quantitative measurements as an aid to the subjective diagnosis, is felt. The performance of snakes for this purpose, however, is heavily deteriorated by the presence of speckle noise. In this paper a new filter, based on local statistics in the image, is proposed, that removes a significant amount of speckle noise in the healthy parts, while it makes the areas infected by WMD more uniform, thus severely improving the performance of the snake. The results after applying the proposed technique are compared with the manual segmentation done by an expert. Keywords— speckle, medical ultrasound, texture, adaptive filter, segmentation, snake

An adaptive speckle suppression filter for medical ultrasonic imaging

An adaptive smoothing technique for speckle suppression in medical B-scan ultrasonic imaging is presented. The technique is based on filtering with appropriately shaped and sized local kernels. For each image pixel, a filtering kernel, which fits to the local homogeneous region containing the processed pixel, is obtained through a local statistics based region growing technique. The performance...

Noise Suppression and Motion Estimation in Medical Ultrasound Imaging

Noise Suppression and Motion Estimation in Medical Ultrasound Imaging by Yong Yue Echocardiographic imaging is a primary modality in the diagnosis of heart disease. Compared to other imaging techniques, such as X-Ray, MRI, and PET, ultrasound imaging owes its great popularity to the fact that it is a safe and non-invasive procedure for visualizing the heart and vasculature. The ultrasound image...

Temperature Mapping Using Ultrasound Digital Images

Introduction:  The  success  of  hyperthermia  depends  on  the  accuracy  of  the  temperature  monitoring in the tumor and the surrounding normal tissue. In this study, the temperature changes  were determined by computing the speckle displacement in the ultrasound digital images. Speckle  tracking algorithm was used to compute the displacement.  Materials and Methods: The experiment was perf...

GPU-Based Block-Wise Nonlocal Means Denoising for 3D Ultrasound Images

Speckle suppression plays an important role in improving ultrasound (US) image quality. While lots of algorithms have been proposed for 2D US image denoising with remarkable filtering quality, there is relatively less work done on 3D ultrasound speckle suppression, where the whole volume data rather than just one frame needs to be considered. Then, the most crucial problem with 3D US denoising ...

Segmenting “Flares” in Ultrasound Images Using Prior Statistics

The common method neonatologists use nowadays to determine White Matter Damage (leukomalacia) is by visual inspection of ultrasound images of the neonatal brain. A need for a (semi)computerized way of delineating the affected regions, in order to make quantitative measurements as an aid to the subjective diagnosis, is felt. The use of active contours for this purpose is a classical approach [1,...
